I just want to say hello. I've just retired from the navy. My member name came from the SWCC instructors in Coronado. Weapons and survival. Lets talk. Ever since I was a little kid. I was stuned by the possibility of nuclear war. I saw the day after, Threads & Testament. Those movies gives you a pretty scary idea of what to expect. Honestly, I think it will be just like the wild west when its over. You might see your self camping in your basement for maybe a month, but when you emerge you never know who is your friend or enemy. Disasters bring out the worst and best of people. For survival, I would say store enough food for 2 years, buy a geiger counter, and water is a must. When the lights go out, just think what the pioners had to do, light a candle or lantern that usually calms some one down. Try to explain what is happening and don't BS, but be subttle. If you live in the mountains and have a well, try to get an old fashion hand pump to draw water. If you dont have a fire place, try to have one built. Propane might be a little hard to get when the SHTF, but charcoal is always on sale and easy to get and store, also make sure you have fire wood. See the thing is, if you have someone out there, hungry, desperate and willing to do anything for what you have. You might have a problem. Now comes trouble, is the person armed? Is the person a scout for a group of scavengers? You have to be on the guard. When i'm home I follow up on the news, look out my windows and listen to my dogs. The dog is the best alarm system around. If there is an unknown coming on your property and the world is in chaos what measures should you take? For starters, you would want to have a weapon to actually take out an engein block, 30-06 fmj 180 grain would do the trick. In WW2 planes were shot down with that stuff. i have a Garand and Stevens for that. One thing to do is pace off your property. Know the limitations and capabilities of your weapons. If you can hit a target at 100 yds with a rifle, try to hit a target with a pistol at 25 to 35 yds. There is a possibility of a malfunction with your longarm and you have to resort to a smallarm. Best to keep'em out of your house then having to fight close quarters with someone. I would also like to introduce the Galil and AK. The Galil is a little bit heavy, but its rugged like an AK. The AK, well you just dont have to explain that, it will give you a syphony of load, fire and eject in rapid succession. Now if there is a swarm of bad guys still coming, and your last supply of oreos are in jeoprady, the Remington 870 Defender is quite the show stopper for Stranger Danger coming your way. I like to have buckshot on hand and also some slugs. Slugs can go through car doors. If the fight comes in side your castle, various smallarms will be best. I like the .357 and .45. With the .357 its not going to rip your hand off like a .44 and if you come across .38 cal ammo, you can use it in your .357. The .45 is just self explanitory. Ammo is always hard to find, but if you shop at walmart and you see the rounds you need for your stockpile, get 'em. I try to buy a hundred dollars of ammo a month. Some things you will have to keep in supply, vitamins, first aid, the nearest hospital is 14 miles from me. If EMS cant come, and your vehicle doesnt work, you have to play doctor, so get suture kits or thread and a emergency first aid guide. If you have children, just try to keep 'em calm and treat their wounds. I have a 4 year old, it took me and my wife and step-daughter to hold down my little boy to pull glass from his foot, imagine if you have to set a limb or suture a cut with no lidocane. I've noticed booze and smokes coming on the rise. Its actuallty best to obtain some.Though I quit smoking, but think about bartering. Its going to be the wild west, ther might not be MTV, Food Network or Dr. Phil. Its going to be rough, survival will be key. I'm gardening, I have a well. I have plans and ideas. I learned in NSW mission planning, sometimes planning is based on ideas and opinons. Also get maps of the state you live in and also the states round you. An atlas is fine but thoe big fold out jobbers are larger scale. Find the largest city or possible target for a nuke and figure out how far you are from a blast radius. Just be prepared. Thanks, seeya.

Great post and lots of things to think about. I do not visit the forum like I should - but plan to be around a little more often.

I plan to updatethe site over the next few weeks - as well as start commenting in my blog. No matter what may happen in the future - life is busy now.

Have you watched Jericho? It was a TV show that lasted 2 season - great show. I see what happens in that show as a likely description of the "conditions" that will exist after TSHTF. Basically - everyone for themselves and small communities trying to exist together.

What kind of preparations have you made so far? You mention weapons - how about food storage? Water? Bugout preparations? Entertainment for the kids? Medical? Etc.

Looking forward to hearing from you -
